About Our Program

Volunteering at Norfolk International Airport is an exciting way to serve the Coastal Virginia community. You can be a part of a team that makes every journey memorable, whether it’s greeting travelers from around the world as a Volunteer Ambassador or sharing comfort through our ORF Welcome Waggin’ therapy dog program.  

Our volunteers bring hospitality, warmth, and friendly faces to every corner of the airport; brightening the journey of every guest that passes through ORF.  

ORF Volunteer Ambassadors

Be a part of all the excitement at Norfolk International Airport as a Volunteer Ambassador!  

The Norfolk International Airport Volunteer Ambassador Program is dedicated to enhancing the travel experience by providing friendly, knowledgeable, and compassionate assistance to all airport guests.  

Through a spirit of hospitality and service, our volunteers serve as welcoming representatives of our airport and community by offering guidance, information, and support to ensure every traveler feels valued, informed, and at ease.

What do Volunteer Ambassadors do? 

Our Volunteer Ambassadors assist travelers with things like:

  • Meet and greet travelers and visitors 
  • Provide directions to various areas of the airport
  • Request wheelchair transport or special assistance as needed  
  • Provide visitor information about the region 

By joining us as a Volunteer Ambassador at Norfolk International Airport, you will be playing a vital role in making sure every traveler’s experience is smooth and enjoyable. Your friendly attitude and know-how will be the secret to our airport’s success!

What are the qualifications to participate? 

Volunteer Ambassadors must meet the following qualifications: 

  • Be at least 18 years old 
  • Communicate well and get along with a variety of people 
  • Be comfortable using email, cell phones/texts, and desktop computers 
  • Commit to a minimum of three shifts per month for six months 
  • Be able to physically perform the duties of an ambassador 
  • Pass a background screening to participate 

ORF Welcome Waggin’ Therapy Dog Program

Bring comfort and smiles as part of the Welcome Waggin’ Therapy Dog Program! 

The Welcome Waggin’ program adds an extra touch of warmth to the airport experience. Our certified therapy dogs and their handlers create a calming, friendly atmosphere for travelers, visitors, and employees alike. These special teams are here for pets, cuddles, and smiles; helping ease travel nerves and brighten the journey for everyone passing through ORF.

What do Welcome Waggin’ Therapy Dog Volunteers do? 

Our Welcome Waggin’ volunteers share comfort and joy throughout the airport by:

  • Greeting passengers in the terminal and concourses 
  • Offering a calm, reassuring presence to travelers 
  • Sharing smiles, photo opportunities, and lighthearted moments 
  • Creating a welcoming environment for everyone passing through ORF 
  • Commit to a minimum of two shifts per month for six months 
  • Be able to physically perform the duties of a Welcome Waggin’ volunteer 
  • Pass a background screening to participate 

What are the qualifications to participate? 

ORF Welcome Waggin’ therapy dog volunteer teams must: 

  • Be at least 18 years old 
  • Have a dog certified through the Alliance of Therapy Dogs certifying organization 
  • Be dependable, friendly, and comfortable interacting with the public 
  • Be able to commit to a regular visit schedule as determined by the program 
  • Complete airport orientation and training 
  • Ensure their therapy dog is well-groomed, well-behaved, and comfortable in busy environments 
  • Be able to physically manage their dog in public settings 
  • Pass a background screening to participate

Volunteers must meet the minimum commitment to maintain their volunteer benefits.  We offer flexible schedules Sunday through Friday, 7AM – 7PM

At Norfolk International Airport, safety and security always come first. That’s why the process of becoming a volunteer includes a few important steps. Review the steps below to learn how you can begin your journey as a valued part of our volunteer team. 

Step 1: Apply

Step 2: Volunteer program coordinator will reach out to schedule an interview.

Step 3: Schedule Background Check and Fingerprinting Appointment 

  • All Norfolk International Airport volunteers are subject to background checks and fingerprinting.  

Step 4: Schedule Mentor Training Shifts

  • All airport volunteers are required to attend a minimum of four training shifts with an experienced volunteer mentor.
